Record “ADR” On Set to Match It Better in Your Film(s)…
ADR is a technique used to give your film clean audio if the sound recorded on the day wasn’t good enough (planes overhead, rain, static interference and other such noises). The problem is ADR gets recorded months after production in a studio. The performer has to get back into character and even then, the soundscape of their voice isn’t always 100% matching to how it was on set. So how do you get better matching ADR in terms of performance and reverb? Record ADR on set! How you might be thinking. Well, the actors are in a natural rhythm anyway, so take them aside and have them run the performance just for audio purposes. It won’t necessarily match the timing of their past stuff but it’ll be close enough where most times you and nudge it and it’ll match their tone and certainly the space better than studio ADR could. Besides, what have you got to lose? If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. This is what I explore in this episode.
